He cared because he wanted some kind of relationship with someone he could call family, but when his son went deaf he couldn’t figure out how to do anything with him again. Just as when he found out the guy pretending to be his brother was telling the truth about him having a brother who passed, but he still shot him because he felt so betrayed but then cried at knowing he lost a real brother and had killed the man he learned to see as his brother.
