Private Jamie Clark was an Australian Army soldier who served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR). From a young age, he dreamed of becoming a soldier and joined the Australian Army on Anzac Day, 25 April 2001, aged 17. He later qualified as a paratrooper, serving with one of the Australian Army's infantry battalions. In 2002, Clark deployed to East Timor as part of Australia's overseas military commitments. In January 2005, he deployed to the Solomon Islands as part of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), under Operation Anode. His unit helped maintain security and supported Australian-led police working to restore stability in the country. On 10 March 2005, while conducting a night patrol on Mount Austin, east of Honiara, Clark was searching an area for a suspected militia weapons cache when he fell into a deep shaft and suffered fatal injuries. He was just 21 years old. His death was an accident during operational service, rather than a death in combat. Clark's service has continued to be commemorated by the Australian Defence Force. The area where troops were accommodated at the RAMSI base was named the Private Jamie Clark Lines in his honour. His story remains part of Australia's history of military peacekeeping in the Pacific.
