Pillay, 85, won the award on October 9, 2026, for her efforts to promote peace and international law. She previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and chaired a United Nations commission that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel has strongly rejected. The Nobel Committee, meanwhile, defended its decision by recognising Pillay’s work to advance international law and ensure accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
