@new.roundup: ASU Hockey Coach Mike Corbett Says Staff Are “Not Monsters” While Matthew Mayich Remains On Life Support ASU hockey interim head coach Mike Corbett says the team’s staff are “human beings too.” He spoke after the Sun Devils’ home opener on Friday, October 9. Matthew Mayich, 21, did not play. He remains on life support after he collapsed during a team workout on August 20. “We hurt too. We are human beings too,” Corbett told reporters. He said Mayich was a young man he recruited. “I think people lose sight of that sometimes, to think we’re these m*nsters, and we’re not,” he said. The workout was outdoors and military-style. It took place as Arizona reached extreme heat. It was led by a former Green Beret who was not affiliated with the Sun Devils. The family’s lawyer told ESPN that Mayich suffered a heat stroke and lost oxygen to his brain. The lawyer said he has “zero chance of recovery.” Corbett took over after former head coach Greg Powers was put on administrative leave on September 30. That came after seven anonymous players sent a letter to the school asking for the coaching staff to be put on leave. The players said they stayed anonymous out of “fear of retaliation from the coaching staff.” Athletics director Graham Rossini said the school’s focus remains on Mayich, his family and the student-athletes. What do you think of Corbett’s response? #Matthew #celebrity #mike #SunDevils #College
