Your ex may not be responding to who you are right now. They may still be responding to who you were when the relationship ended. And this is something I wish more people understood after a breakup. Let’s say the last few weeks of your relationship were bad… You were anxious because you could feel them pulling away. You asked what was wrong more often. Maybe you wanted reassurance. Maybe every little change in their behavior started a conversation because you were terrified you were losing them. Then the breakup happens. And now you’re thinking: But I’m not acting like that anymore. You may not be. But your ex doesn’t automatically know that. They walked away with an emotional memory of what being in the relationship felt like toward the end. So when you keep reaching out trying to explain yourself, prove you’ve changed, apologize one more time, ask where their head is at, or convince them that things could be different… you may think you’re showing them the new version of you. But from their side? They may just be experiencing more of the exact dynamic they were trying to get distance from. That’s the part people miss. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do after a breakup isn’t give your ex more information about how you’ve changed. It’s stop giving them new evidence that nothing has. Because something interesting can happen when you finally stop interrupting their experience of losing you. They don’t have your texts constantly reminding them of the breakup. They aren’t having to defend their decision every few days. They aren’t being asked how they feel before they’ve even had enough distance to know. And eventually, they’re left alone with their own memories. Not just the bad ones. The inside jokes. The way you made them laugh. The places you went. The routines they didn’t realize they’d miss. The parts of you that became normal to them until suddenly they weren’t there anymore. And meanwhile, life keeps moving. You keep moving. That’s when the picture they have of you can finally have room to change. Not because you strategically disappeared to manipulate them into missing you. And not because silence magically makes every ex come back. But because you stopped trying to control what they think about you long enough for them to have their own experience of your absence. That’s a very different thing. So if you’re sitting there tonight thinking: What if they’re forgetting me? What if I need to remind them of what we had? What if doing nothing is making this worse? Remember this: You don’t need to keep reminding someone of your presence for them to experience your absence. Sometimes they need enough space from the version of you they left… to become curious about the version of you they haven’t met yet. 🤍 #relationships #breakups #breakup #breakupadvice #relationshipcoach
