@shae.houston: A Black #specialeducation #teacher in #Iowa has been awarded $425,000 after a federal jury found that his school district failed to adequately address repeated #racialharassment from students. Robert Bender began working at Evans Middle School in Ottumwa, Iowa, in 2021. According to his lawsuit, students called him the N-word nearly every week, sometimes directly in front of teachers and administrators. He also received notes containing racist messages and repeatedly complained to school officials about the treatment. Bender argued that administrators allowed the harassment to continue while disciplining the same students more harshly for other misconduct, including profanity and minor behavioral violations. In September 2026, a federal jury sided with Bender and awarded him $425,000 in compensatory damages, holding the school district and two administrators responsible for the hostile work environment. #fyp Source: Iowa Capital Dispatch, Atlanta Black Star, Chicago Defender
