After my auntie died (at only 40 from drinking too much alcohol), I kept thinking, This isn’t how it was supposed to go. She wasn’t supposed to die. Not like that. Not yet. It all felt out of order. It was as if life had skipped ahead without asking me, leaving me without the slightest bit of hope for my future — a future where my Auntie wouldn’t watch me, my siblings and cousins grow up. According to any available dictionary, hope is the confident desire or trust that a future event or desired result will occur. When someone you love passes, everyone tells you to have hope because you might see them again. In heaven. For me, that hope didn’t ease the pain. It didn’t ease the questions. Or the guilt. Or the anger. It didn’t make any part of my grief any easier. But Romans 8 did. There were so many moments where I didn’t know how to pray, or if I even wanted to. It was hard to believe that God was working all things for my good. But He saw my heart, understood my emotions, and answered the prayers I didn’t realize I’d prayed, even though it took me months to realize it. Romans 8 didn’t give me answers for why things happened the way they did. It didn’t tie up the loose ends or quiet every “what if.” Instead, it reminded me that when I didn’t have the strength to reach for Him, He was already reaching for me. It gave me a new perspective. And because of that, I found hope for a tomorrow better than today and for a day better than tomorrow. #griefandloss #auntie
