Residents across California should prepare for possible power outages Wednesday through Saturday as a significant offshore wind event brings strong to potentially damaging winds, plunging humidity levels, warming temperatures, and an increased threat of rapidly spreading wildfires! Utility companies across the state are preparing for potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs [PSPS] to reduce the risk of electrical equipment igniting wildfires during dangerous weather conditions. 🚨NORTHERN & CENTRAL CALIFORNIA: PG&E has expanded its potential power shutoff plans to approximately 70,000 customers across 29 Counties, with outages possible beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into Saturday. Areas under consideration include portions of the North Bay, East Bay, Sierra Nevada foothills, Sacramento Valley, and Central Coast. Counties potentially affected include Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Alameda, Contra Costa, Butte, Shasta, Tehama, Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Yuba, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and others. Strong offshore winds will combine with exceptionally dry vegetation, increasing the potential for new fires to spread quickly. Winds are expected to peak Thursday across portions of Northern California, with critical conditions potentially continuing into Saturday. 🚨SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Southern California Edison is considering preventative power shutoffs that could affect more than 200,000 customers as Santa Ana winds strengthen Thursday and Friday. Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and surrounding areas face heightened fire weather concerns, particularly in wind-prone valleys, foothills, mountain passes, and communities near dry vegetation. Wind gusts of 40-60 mph are expected in many exposed areas, with localized gusts reaching 70 mph. Relative humidity could fall into the single digits and teens, while temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s in some areas. Malibu officials have already warned residents of potential power shutoffs beginning Thursday, including portions of central and western Malibu. Strong winds can damage electrical equipment or bring power lines into contact with vegetation. Combined with extremely low humidity and dry fuels, any ignition could spread rapidly and become difficult to contain. These precautionary outages are intended to reduce the chance of power infrastructure starting a wildfire. However, not everyone in a potential shutoff area will necessarily lose power, and the number of customers affected could change as forecasts evolve. Make sure you go ahead and charge phones and backup batteries, prepare flashlights and emergency supplies, keep vehicles fueled, and have a plan for refrigerated medications or medical equipment requiring electricity. Residents in fire-prone areas should also review evacuation routes and emergency plans. Power restoration may take additional time after winds subside because utility crews must inspect equipment before safely re-energizing lines🚨🔥
