@s39bf547: HPV IN MEN CAN BE HARD TO SPOT. HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULDN'T RELY ON SYMPTOMS ALONE.
HPV, or human papillomavirus, is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. And many people who have it never notice any symptoms.
There are more than 200 types of HPV, and they don't all behave the same way.
Some high-risk types, including HPV 16 and 18, can contribute to certain cancers if the infection persists.
Other types, especially HPV 6 and 11, commonly cause genital warts. These wart-causing types are different from the types most associated with cancer.
Here's what many people miss: a person can have HPV without visible warts, pain, or any other obvious signs.
HPV can also affect the mouth and throat. In the United States, HPV is linked to many cancers of the oropharynx, including areas around the tonsils and the base of the tongue, and these cancers are more common in men than women.
A persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a neck lump, or unexplained voice changes should be checked by a healthcare professional. These symptoms can have many causes, so they don't automatically mean cancer or HPV.
There's no general routine HPV screening test for men, but vaccination can help prevent new infections from HPV types that cause many warts and cancers.
Know the facts, don't panic, and talk with a healthcare professional if you have concerns.
