Today, 6th June 2026, marks the 60th birthday of Tony Yeboah, the first player ever to win back-to-back Goal of the Month awards. That distinction alone places Anthony Yeboah in a category no other footballer has entered. In the 1995/96 Premier League season, he scored two goals of unrepeatable quality — against Liverpool and against Wimbledon — in successive months that the BBC's Match of the Day panel awarded him the Goal of the Month prize consecutively. No player before him had ever won it back to back. No player since has managed it either. The debate over which of the two goals was the greater has never been settled, and perhaps that is precisely the point — a man who scored two goals so exceptional that even those who saw both cannot choose between them has achieved something beyond ordinary sporting measurement. That record stands to this day. Anthony Yeboah was born on 6th June 1966 in Kumasi, the capital of Ghana's Ashanti Region, into an Akan family. He attended local primary and secondary schools in Kumasi before the pull of football became impossible to resist. Kumasi is Ghana's second largest city and the historical seat of the Ashanti Kingdom — a city of deep cultural pride and passionate football identity. Growing up in the shadow of Asante Kotoko, one of Africa's most decorated clubs, Yeboah's destiny was shaped from early childhood. He made his senior debut for Kotoko in 1981 at just fifteen, winning three consecutive Ghana Premier League titles in 1981, 1982 and 1983, and the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1983 — all before turning eighteen. He later moved to Cornerstone FC, then to Okwawu United, where he scored 35 goals in 35 games and was named Ghana Premier League top scorer in both 1986 and 1987. In 1988, Yeboah moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken, becoming one of the first Black players ever to appear in the Bundesliga. He scored 31 goals in 72 appearances before joining Eintracht Frankfurt in 1990, where he truly announced himself to Europe. In 156 appearances he scored 89 goals, won the Bundesliga Golden Boot in 1992/93 and 1993/94, and became the first African player ever to captain a Bundesliga club. He finished runner-up for African Footballer of the Year in 1993 and ninth in the FIFA World Player of the Year rankings that same year. Leeds United signed him in January 1995 for £3.4 million. He scored 12 goals in 21 games in his first half-season, then in 1995/96 produced the two goals that made history. Against Liverpool, an over-the-shoulder volley crashed off the underside of the bar past David James. Against Wimbledon, a chest control followed by a thunderbolt that nearly dismantled the goal entirely. Back-to-back BBC Goal of the Month — the first player ever to achieve it. He was voted Leeds United Player of the Year in 1995/96 and scored 32 goals in 66 appearances in total. A personality clash with George Graham ended his time there in 1997. He moved to Hamburger SV, scoring 28 goals in four seasons, before completing his career at Al-Ittihad in Qatar in 2001/02, winning the Qatar Stars League and the Emir of Qatar Cup. He represented Ghana from 1985 to 1997, earning 59 caps and scoring 29 goals — the third highest tally in the nation's history behind only Abedi Pelé and Asamoah Gyan — and appeared at three Africa Cup of Nations. He was named Ghana Footballer of the Year in 1997. He is married to Tesha Yeboah and they have two children, Shereena and Anthony Jr. His nephews Kelvin and Obed Yeboah are professional footballers. He runs the Anthony Yeboah Sportpromotion agency with his cousin Michael Osei and owns the Yegoala hotel chain across Accra and Kumasi. In 2008 he became chairman of Berekum Chelsea. He stood 1.80 metres tall and celebrated every goal by wagging his index finger at the crowd — a signature as recognisable as the goals themselves. Sixty years on from his birth in Kumasi, his name remains synonymous with the spectacular, and with a record that belongs to him alone. Baabi a mifiri.
