One year ago today, at 6:36pm Nashville time, I lost the joy and light of my life. I’ve known a lot of grief in my life, but nothing has hit me harder than Betty’s cancer diagnosis and loss. I can still remember everything as if it were only yesterday — the lump in my throat when the vet said Betty might have cancer on the same week we lost her sister a year prior, the anxiety and ways I tried to distract myself during her amputation surgery, the way I held my breath after every scan and chemo session, and the tears stinging in my eyes when the emergency vet told me her cancer was back and there was nothing left I could do. I blamed myself for months and months, and I still do. I cry silently to myself a few nights a week in hopes to not wake up my husband and two other pups. But then I remember: this would break her heart. It would break Betty’s heart to see how devastated and sad I am. She was the happiest girl in the world and she loved me so much. She would want me to be happy. She would want me to have ice cream all the time (she literally told me this through @lilmisspetpsychic), she would want me to lay in the grass and look up at the blue sky, she would want me to take walks with Dawn and Frodo on sunny days, she would want me to see her in random things as I travel with my husband and my friends (which she has shown herself to me on a bus in Edinburgh, and a bunny rabbit in Nashville, and some cafes in Paris). It’s so easy for me to remember the last few weeks, months of her life. How even the thought of losing her made me break down. But how could I ever forget all the light and joy she brought into my life, and the lives of everyone who was lucky enough to meet her? And I remind myself of @sara_rian_books’ words. Betty — You had a sad death, but you were not a sad thing. You were the happiest thing. My soul will find yours in every lifetime. Mommy’s got you. Always. #petloss #souldog #griefjourney
