He killed her father then demanded she marry him. The story of Roro Jonggrang is one of the most famous legends in Indonesia. Drawn in the manner of Javanese batik tulis Stories retold from myth and folklore. In the popular telling, her father the giant king started the war with Pengging. Today a statue in the north chamber of Prambanan's great Shiva temple is still called Roro Jonggrang; it is really the goddess Durga, and people have left it flowers for centuries. Full tale: He killed her father then demanded she marry him. The story of Roro Jonggrang is one of the most famous legends in Indonesia. Long ago on Java, a giant king ruled the dry kingdom of Prambanan. His daughter, Roro Jonggrang, was famed for her beauty. Her name means slender maiden. Next door lay green Pengging, and its prince, Bandung Bondowoso, could command spirits. To grow his kingdom, the giant king went to war with Pengging, and in the fighting Bandung killed him. Then he walked into the palace and saw the king's daughter. He wanted her at first sight and told her she would be his wife. She could never marry her father's killer. But he had conquered her kingdom, and she dared not refuse him. So she set a condition she believed impossible: she would marry him if he built a thousand temples in one night. Bandung agreed. His spirits could build fast. But spirits worked only in the dark and fled at first light. At nightfall Bandung raised his arms, and the spirits climbed out of the earth. All night the spirits hauled and stacked stone, and temples rose across the plain: a hundred, then five hundred, then nine hundred. Before dawn, Roro Jonggrang saw they would finish, and she would have to marry him. Then she thought of a way to stop them, and ran to wake the palace women. Villages pounded rice at dawn. So she set the women pounding rice and burning straw in the east, to make the spirits think morning had come. The fires turned the eastern sky red, the pounding of the rice rang out, and the roosters woke and crowed. The spirits thought dawn had come, so they fled, leaving nine hundred and ninety nine temples and the thousandth unfinished. Bandung saw the red sky was only burning straw and knew the princess had tricked him. He strode to the palace and found her in the rice yard. In his fury he cursed her: since one temple was missing, she would be the thousandth. Roro Jonggrang held his gaze as she turned to stone where she stood. #indonesia #indonesiafolklore #asianfolklore #asianmythology
