If you’re visiting Yellowstone National Park and want a place where you can enjoy unique geothermal scenery while also having a great chance of seeing wildlife, Mammoth Hot Springs is definitely worth a stop. Located in the northern part of Yellowstone, Mammoth Hot Springs is famous for its beautiful travertine terraces formed by hot spring water flowing over limestone. But one of the most memorable sights here is the large number of elk that often gather around Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and the surrounding grassy areas. The lawns near the hotel are one of the easiest places in Yellowstone to spot elk. You may see them quietly grazing on the grass, walking near the parking area, or even crossing the road. With historic Yellowstone buildings in the background and wild elk roaming freely nearby, the whole scene feels like a classic American West postcard. Fall is an especially exciting time to visit. From around September through October, elk enter their rutting season. During this period, large bull elk with impressive antlers can often be seen surrounded by groups of females. If you’re lucky, you may even hear the famous high-pitched bugling calls of the males echoing through the area. Although elk may look calm and gentle, they can be very aggressive during the rut. Never approach them for photos or stand between a bull and the females. Yellowstone recommends keeping at least 25 yards, or about 23 meters, away from elk. Mammoth Hot Springs is also a great stop for travelers who prefer not to hike too much. Many viewpoints and attractions are accessible by car, and parking around the hotel area is convenient. If you visit Yellowstone in the fall, spend a little extra time around Mammoth Hot Springs. You never know—you might turn a corner and find an entire herd of elk waiting on the grass. #Yellowstone #YellowstoneNationalPark #MammothHotSprings #MammothHotSpringsHotel #Elk
