Y’all. The cloud isn’t due to the rocket hitting anything, nor is it from the rocket breaking the sound barrier. It’s due to water vapor from the exhaust plume expanding and freezing into crystals, and then those crystals refracting the light of the rising sun (it can also happen at twilight when the sun has set beyond the horizon as well). If you’ve ever seen translucent/luminescent clouds in the late afternoon that have a sort of rainbow sheen to them, it’s a similar principal. Also, it’s such an expected effect that these early morning launches have “jellyfish cloud warnings” associated with them! I’ll see local meteorologists alert people that the “jellyfish cloud” is to be expected. No funny business—just neat atmospheric conditions!
