I did a funeral service for one of my former Girl Scouts that was murdered, her mom was in the military. There were rumors that WBC was coming to protest. A Biker Club came and offered protection for us. They stood between us and the media and were there for the whole day making sure we were not bothered.

Interesting information. Honestly, at the start of the video I just assumed their kind of hate had been integrated into the MAGA group and so just didn't generate the attention they used to.

My ex father in law was one of the Patriot Guard Riders who gathered motorcycle riders at veterans funerals to screen them off from the Westboro people.

1 of the best things on the internet during that time was when someone bought the house across the street from Westboro Baptist church and painted its whole exterior ✨RAINBOW✨

I grew up near the WBC compound and even went to school with a couple of Fred's granddaughters. These days I still see them out with their little signs every now and then. But like you said they are much more low-key.

I saw a documentary years ago that went over Fred and how he likely had a rage disorder that fueled his obsession, and it always made me feel that once he was dead, and the others didn’t have the same level of rage, it would likely die out quickly without that fuel.

I'm glad you brought that up about the Mormon church. my wife is ex-mo and she understandably has a lot of feelings learning about all the changes the church is implementing. the way her face lit up when I said it sounds to me like they're flailing trying to retain members. glad to know I wasn't completely wrong.

They mostly protest outside the T-Mobile Center in KC and other performing arts centers around the region. But they do travel just not as much.

I was part of a group that would show up to W.B.C. protests. we would show up in stupid costumes, and hold irrelevant and silly signs. Usually someone would bring a boom-box and play some music for us to dance to. They hated us because they fed on rage reactions, but all we did was show up and have fun and laugh in their face.

I did some reading on the founder, Fred Phelps. Early on, he was a successful & highly respected civil rights attorney, that he supposedly stated “I systematically brought down the Jim Crow laws” in the Kansas town he resided in. A civil rights lawyer?

Not saying Christianity is a cult, I don’t have the credentials to make that claim, but I had a similar experience when I was a kid and my grandparents were teaching me about Jesus. I have no memories of ever actually believing what they were telling me. I have lots of memories of thinking, “that makes no sense” or “why are we talking to nobody?” Or “this is weird”

One thing Im noticing the kids latch onto is queerness, and I am so frikn stoked! Whatever the next cultural iteration is queerness will be front and center. Everybody is gonna learn how to nurture and be safe.

As someone who lives 3ish hours from Westboro, there was a period of 10 years where they absolutely were everywhere, like all the time. It wasn’t just military funerals. A kid local to me ended his own life, and WBC went to his funeral. Went to multiple concerts they had a presence at.
