The signature soloist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association He was an American-Canadian gospel singer and hymn writer whose deep, resonant bass-baritone voice became the musical heartbeat of modern Christian evangelism. George Beverly Shea performed live before an estimated 220 million people across six continents over six decades. Early Life and Musical Roots Born in Winchester, Ontario, Canada, on February 1, 1909, Shea grew up in a devout Christian household as the son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister. He began singing in church choirs as a youth and learned to play the organ and violin. During the Great Depression, while working as a clerk at a medical insurance company in New York, he honed his vocal skills, singing on local radio stations and in churches. In 1932, at age 23, Shea composed the music to "I'd Rather Have Jesus," setting melodies to words written by Rhea F. Miller. The hymn became his signature song, outlining his lifelong dedication to ministry over secular commercial music careers. The Billy Graham CrusadesIn 1943, Shea joined WMBI in Chicago, where he met a young, dynamic evangelist named Billy Graham. Their partnership began when Graham invited Shea to sing on his radio program, Songs in the Night. In 1947, Shea formally joined Graham’s team, becoming a cornerstone of the historic Billy Graham Crusades. For the next 60 years, Shea opened crusade meetings worldwide, preparing audiences with beloved gospel classics such as "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." His rendition of "How Great Thou Art" helped popularize the hymn globally and became a hallmark of the crusade broadcasts. Over his career, he recorded more than 70 albums, earned ten Grammy nominations, and won a Grammy Award in 1965 for Best Gospel or Other Religious Recording. In 2011, at age 102, he received the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. Shea was inducted into both the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (1978) and the Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame (1996). He holds a Guinness World Record for singing live to more people than any other solo performer in history. George Beverly Shea continued to sing into his late 90s, maintaining his signature rich tone and sharp memory. He passed away on April 16, 2013, in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 104, leaving behind a profound musical legacy that defined 20th-century sacred music. #GeorgeBeverlyShea #HowGreatThouArt #IdRatherHaveJesus #GospelMusic #BillyGrahamCrusade
