P70 Climbing Stairs | Fibonacci Rolling Window Visualized Climbing Stairs is the classic dynamic programming warmup that reduces to the Fibonacci recurrence. You are given a staircase of n steps, and at each move you may take either one step or two steps. The task is to count the distinct ways to reach the top without enumerating every route by hand. The common pitfall is a naive recursive tree that branches into two choices at every stair. The number of paths grows exponentially, so the branching tree blows up long before n gets large, which makes brute-force enumeration impractical for even moderate n. The core idea is to look at the very last move. To land on stair n, you must have just come from stair n minus one taking one step, or from stair n minus two taking two steps. There is no other way to arrive, so the number of ways to reach stair n equals the ways to reach stair n minus one plus the ways to reach stair n minus two. That is the Fibonacci recurrence, and each answer is built from the two answers just before it, so you compute forward stair by stair without branching at all. The key details are the base cases and the rolling window. There is exactly one way to stand on stair zero, the ground, doing nothing, and one way to reach stair one with a single one step. Because each new value depends only on the previous two, you keep just two variables and slide them forward after each step, discarding the oldest value. The loop runs n minus one times, and the second variable always holds the answer for the current stair. The complexity is linear time and constant space. The code performs exactly n minus one additions, so the running time grows in proportion to the number of stairs (O(n)), and it stores only two variables regardless of how large n becomes (O(1) space).
