There is something deeply unsettling about watching Living in a Documentary publicly defend Elphaba Orion Doherty while serious safeguarding concerns are being raised online. I know Laura Jane Stephens personally. She entered my life when I was speaking out about a convicted child sex offender, promising to make a documentary. What followed was an intense friendship, nine months of suspected catfishing involving another convicted offender, distressing accounts of vulnerable people in crisis, and a written admission that she had impersonated someone I believed I was helping. When I ended that friendship, I experienced what I describe as almost two years of public accusations and humiliation. Now, in 2026, I am watching the same woman publicly question safeguarding reports and criticise the Elphaba awareness community. The allegations concerning Elphaba require evidence and proper examination. But the absence of publicly known action does not automatically mean safeguarding concerns are unfounded. Different people. Different stories. Yet the recurring involvement in sensitive safeguarding controversies leaves me asking serious questions. Child safeguarding is not entertainment. Vulnerable people’s trauma is not a storyline. And accountability must apply to everyone. I am sharing my experience because I believe people deserve to understand the history behind the person now speaking so confidently about theirs. I kept the receipts. #Elphaba #Orion #ElphabaDoherty #LivingInADocumentary #Safeguarding
