@beckydintn: Yep - that is this morning's SpaceX launch! That bright "comet" with the glowing fan behind it is called a Space Jellyfish. What happened: SpaceX launched Falcon 9 at 6:33 AM EDT today, Tuesday Oct 13, from Cape Canaveral, Florida It was the CRS-35 cargo mission to the International Space Station, carrying about 6,500 lbs of supplies The rocket flew northeast up the East Coast, so it was visible from Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia - that's why your friend in Dandridge caught it. Why it glows like that: It launched just before sunrise. On the ground it was still dark, but 50-70 miles up, the rocket's exhaust plume was already in sunlight. The sunlight lights up the frozen exhaust and makes that big glowing jellyfish shape in the sky. Totally normal, just rare to see so clearly! Lots of folks across the East Coast posted the same thing this morning - you picked a good day to look up.
