@coach_mundy_: What’s the difference between training for “bodybuilding” and training for “powerlifting”? How many reps are left in the tank. Because one is more hypertrophy-specific, the other is more strength-specific. But choosing “hypertrophy” doesn’t mean you can’t still be strong. - “Bodybuilding”, 0-2 RIR is ideal. When only doing a single set, sure.. 0 RIR/Failure makes sense. But when doing multiple sets, you shouldn’t be forcing failure.. especially allowing your form to drastically change. You’re then doing a different task than you started with. A great rep range is 4-8 reps, the heavier you use, the easier to gauge RIR - “Powerlifting”, 2-4 RIR is ideal. With “powerlifting”, forcing sets to failure never makes sense because you notice the drastic reduction in strength going into later sets. You look to be as strong as you can for all of your sets. A great rep range is 1-5 - Now the question is, if progressive overload is the main thing we’re striving for regardless of “bodybuilding” or “powerlifting”.. why would you ever put yourself in positions to be significantly weaker? - Training to failure does not automatically elicit more gains. Because again.. you’re doing multiple sets. Look to be as strong as possible for all sets.

Basically, unc doesn’t like trying when he works out

So instead of forcing the last 1 or 2 reps i should just leave it and do it on my 2nd set?

Honestly, switching to this approach has made such a difference. When I took my first set to 0 RIR, I had to drop the weight for the second set. But when I stop at 1–2 RIR on the first set, I can use the same weight for the second set too. It’s crazy how much of a difference it makes. Thanks, unc 🙏

but shouldnt i push myself really hard in the final set? or would that cause too much fatigue for remaining exercises?

unc is it possible to reach failure at a moderate heart rate (e.g. in weighted pull ups)

yo mundy, how do make my strength equal if I dont do the same number of reps for each arm example: lateral raise right arm 7 and left arm 5 reps ty mundy you the goat

Makes so much sense that's why, when i always trained to failure i never got stronger, then after managing my fatigue i progress more

I just did this intuitively; I would rather do another set than fatigue myself for just the gains of 1 more stimulating rep

Doing two sets an missing 1 rep on the first set genuinely makes no difference in the negative sense it keeps fatigue at bay and allows you to recover better between sets and even days for tha matter
