How much should I pay my parents? Does taking over a bill count?

travel tax agent told me “you can maintain your tax home while you are traveling through work or duplication of housing expenses – you don’t have to do both. For the work method, your fully taxed work must “frame” your travel assignments every 12 months – fully taxed work before and after traveling.”. why does no one ever mention this option? that we dont necessarily have to pay rent since the irs only looks at maintaining “tax home” which can be made with 3 months of working in our home tax area a year?? it gets me nervous but the travel tax agent specifically told me this and we verified through irs website. but no one mentions it so i get nervous

Just hire a CPA they will let you know the laws. They know them better than any recruiter or random person on tiktok.

can you explain the 12 month clock. If I work in one city in Missouri and then got to another city 3hrs away from that one but still in Missouri does the clock start over because I'm in a new city?

Also wage recharacterization is illegal. Paying low hourly wage comparing to the locals with unusual high stipend. A red flag for the IRS.

And recruiters will lie about these things because they're not the ones who will get audited.

*facility based not agency based. Recruiters are not tax experts, don’t take advice from them

Travel recruiter here! 😊 Just want to clarify a few things with actual IRS sources because facility rules and tax rules are NOT the same thing!
1. 50-mile rule: Hospitals absolutely can require travelers to live 50+ miles away. I see this on job postings all the time! But that’s a facility requirement, NOT an IRS rule for tax-free stipends. The IRS looks at your tax home and whether you must travel away from it for work.
2. 12-month rule: A new hospital does NOT automatically reset your 12 months. The IRS says multiple short assignments in the same location can count as long-term work. Changing facilities isn’t an automatic loophole.
3. Tax-free stipends: Just because your agency pays your stipends without taking out taxes doesn’t mean you automatically qualify. Those payments still have to meet IRS requirements, or they may be taxable.
I think it’s really important that we’re educating travelers with facts, not just repeating what we’ve heard. These are people’s livelihoods and taxes we’re talking about!
