@ironandhonorthearchive: Most people don't know this… On February 7, 1904... A fire broke out in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Within hours, flames were spreading through the city's business district. Buildings burned. Roofs collapsed. And firefighters struggled to contain the disaster. Baltimore called for help. Fire companies rushed in from Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and surrounding communities. They brought fire engines. Hoses. And experienced crews ready to fight. But when they reached the burning streets... They discovered something almost unbelievable. Their hose connections didn't match Baltimore's hydrants. Back then, American cities often used different sizes and threading on their fire equipment. A hose from one city might not connect to a hydrant in another. And while firefighters desperately tried to make their equipment work... The flames kept spreading. For more than 30 hours, Baltimore burned. By the time the fire was contained... Approximately 1,500 buildings had been destroyed. More than 70 blocks were devastated. And the disaster exposed a dangerous weakness in American firefighting. Firefighters could travel hundreds of miles to help another city, only to discover their equipment couldn't connect. The Baltimore fire became a powerful argument for standardized fire-hose couplings. In the years that followed, national fire protection organizations pushed for uniform threads and fittings. The goal was simple. A fire engine from one community should be able to connect to equipment in another. Standardization took decades, and differences still exist today. But the lesson from Baltimore was never forgotten. Because when a city is burning... The men coming to help shouldn't have to worry about whether their hoses fit. They should only have to worry about putting out the fire.
