It came out Tuesday, October 13. The four-time Super Bowl champion told PEOPLE he had undiagnosed ADHD growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana. Later, he dealt with anxiety attacks. As Steelers quarterback, he felt extreme highs and lows. “You didn’t talk about it,” he said. As a prominent male athlete, he struggled with the stigma of admitting he was not okay. He called asking for help one of the “hardest things” he ever did. He worked with a therapist, a psychiatrist and a pastor. He was formally diagnosed with depression in the late ’90s. His wife, Tammy, 65, helped him see it differently. “This is not a choice,” she told him. “It’s not your fault.” On hard days, Terry tells Tammy he is not having a good day. She helps him get his mind off it. The couple even has a name for it. They say “Roy” has come to visit. “Men think that’s a weakness. I got past it being a weakness.
