To save everyone watching part 2: Cattails can produce more starch per acre than wheat, but they’re much harder and more expensive to harvest and process. They grow in wetlands, their underground roots (where they store most of their carbs) have to be dug out of mud, and the starch has to be separated from tough fibers. They also absorb pollutants from the water and soil, and their flour lacks gluten, making it unsuitable for traditional bread without other ingredients. Wheat is much easier to grow, harvest, store, and mill on a massive scale. Higher yield doesn’t automatically mean a better crop.

As a boy, we would cut them and let them dry out. Then when there were evenings with tons of mosquitoes, we could light the ends and carry them or stick the stem in the ground. They smoldered like a cigar and the smoke kept the mosquitoes away.

way to over simplify. if you want to make flat bread, sure. but you can not make any normal rising bread because it lacks gluten.
growing this for commercial use would be horrible. they are growing in areas with standing water. to be usable for food the water and soil must be uncontaminated. if you had to create an environment to grow cattail crops would take a tremendous amount of clean water.

what "requires zero agricultural labor" means is it grows wild. if you were to cultivate it, that would be agricultural labor.

It’s illegal to forage for them on public land in Fl. They’re too abundant, it would hurt profit margins somewhere 🙃

Yeah but how can you cultivate easily? They need massive amounts of water. How can you harvest and get it to market efficiently?
