We don't have a dad, and we don't have a mom and there might be no need for a dad. This is not a conventional family. Family comes in many forms. There are kids with only one dad, and there are kids with only one mom. Also, in Tom's case, there are people out there who don't want to have children, and that's okay, because those people can be amazing aunts, amazing uncles, or godparents.
