yeah I understood almost immediately. nine years is a long time to waste on a person who claimed that they disnt want to move forward with you, only for them to get with someone else and do a complete 180 after only a fraction of that time. it's not about longing for that person. it's about the time and energy and rational labor wasted

To anyone going through a situation similar: advice I had gotten when I was starting to date was that dating just to date seems fun until you’ve spent ten years of your life with someone and have no guaranteed future together. If you want marriage, establish that fact early on. You don’t need to get engaged quickly, but don’t waste ten years waiting on a promise.
