Kalmunai, Sri Lanka — A 24-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker, Anojan Sivarasa, has received a major legal reprieve after Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court overturned his death sentence over a Facebook comment deemed insulting to Prophet Muhammad. Sri Lanka’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Arun Hemachandra, announced on October 14 that the court had set aside the death sentence on October 13. He said the decision followed sustained diplomatic and legal efforts by the Sri Lankan government. The case began after Anojan posted a comment during an online religious dispute linked to a viral video involving a stray dog and Hindu pilgrims. According to published reports, he later deleted the comment and shared an apology video. However, screenshots of the post reportedly reached his employer and Saudi authorities. A court in Al-Ahsa initially sentenced him to five years in prison and imposed a fine of 3 million Saudi riyals. On September 17, an appeals court increased the punishment to death under its interpretation of Sharia law. The case prompted concern from human rights organisations and intensified diplomatic efforts by Sri Lanka. A legal delegation travelled to Saudi Arabia to help challenge the sentence. Human Rights Watch researcher Joey Shea said: “Sentencing a migrant worker to death over a Facebook comment that he has publicly apologised for is an outrageous overreaction from Saudi authorities amid a surge in executions,” adding, “No one should face execution for a comment on religion.” The Supreme Court’s latest decision removes the death sentence, but it remains unclear whether Anojan will continue serving a prison sentence, face further proceedings or be released. The ruling is a significant development for Anojan and his family. However, the final outcome of his case remains uncertain.
