Leicester Crown Court previously heard that Chad Gurney, then aged 19, arranged to meet a man in Leicester via the dating app in 2018. Following consensual contact in a nearby park, Gurney launched a sudden attack as they returned toward a car park, attempting to stab the victim in the neck with a pair of scissors. The victim suffered a neck injury and fled when Gurney attempted a second blow. Gurney walked into a police station later that evening and confessed he had intended to kill the man. While he later tried to retract his confession, Leicestershire Police detectives searched his home and discovered a diary detailing violent thoughts alongside a notebook headed "planning a murder," which listed eight methods to kill, including cutting a throat with scissors. In January 2019, Gurney was handed a 13-year prison sentence with five years on extended licence for attempted murder. On 24 September 2026, 27-year-old Gurney died in custody at HMP Deerbolt in County Durham. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death.
