I totally agree with this. I’m 26, staff SWE, I don’t want to work any more hours than I do rn. But for me I’m mostly just burnt out. Working for an AI forefront company means absolutely no respect for employees lives. I’ve saved up 500k and I’m ready to move on with my life and find something that brings me some joy

It’s not ironic at all and not a trap, just part of the game 🤷♂️optimize to make the most amount of 💰 asap so you can buy financial freedom while you’re still in your 20s. The real trap is trying to pursue your passion while your broke with no financial cushion, freedom, security etc and then spending the rest of your life grinding to make it back

I've been in the industry long enough (2010 grads) that I've gone through that and came out with a renewed sense of purpose.

Realizing that corporate life sucks and wanting to quit to do something else is not unique to SWE or the “ability to optimize systems” lol, and I say that as a SWE. You’re just describing how high earners are the only ones in a position to actually make the choice to quit.

Locking in when you're young sounds good, but you end up missing out on your formidable years and wind up a shell of a human. I know plenty who did this.

this is just how big tech is, youre making ok money to center divs and tweak button colors, its a dead end job. once you work on something that matters you supercharge both your work impact and comp and life becomes much more enjoyable, it does take working hard vs taking the path of least resistance and joining google or meta

🤔 So you're saying if someone has around 3 million dollars, it's not with it to work an additional year for another 500k?

How many of your friends are starting families? IMO that’s the larger reason — when you start a family you realize that 24/7 oncall doesn’t really make sense for supporting a kid
