@animaldefendersintl: There is a serious lack of transparency around what happens to animals in labs behind closed doors. The latest UK Home Office report on non-compliance with regulations raises concerns about: how much is actually being seen, how breaches are dealt with, and whether they are being prevented from happening again. The report indicates that the majority (69%) of non-compliance cases are self-reported while very little (3%) are identified through Home Office inspections. With the system relying so heavily on establishments to identify and report their own breaches, who is independently checking what is really happening? Who ensures that all non-compliance cases are being self-reported? Behind these statistics are real animals who have experienced suffering that should never have happened. The report records cases including: 🐁A mother removed from a cage and killed, resulting in unweaned pups starving to death. 🐕An animal trapped by its tail by a cage lid for around 20 hours. 🐒A missing animal found alive inside a waste bag and subsequently euthanised. 🐇Animals left without water for up to five days. Hundreds of animals are victims of non-compliance every year. There may be hundreds more that are not being reported. What’s more concerning is that most non-compliance cases are dealt with through lower-level remedies, such as letters of reprimand, with prosecution reserved for the most serious cases. This means that animals continue to suffer because of human carelessness and too often, not enough is done to hold those responsible to account. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Help us push for a system where every breach is identified, reported, investigated and prevented from happening again. 👉Sign the petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/778680 👉Contact your MP and ask them to support an independent public inquiry into the regulation of animal experimentation: theyworkforyou.com #EndAnimalTesting #UKHomeOffice #ADI
