Porfirio Rubirosa might have been the most interesting man of the 20th century. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1909, he somehow managed to fit about five different lives into one. He was a diplomat, an international polo player, a racing driver, a soldier and probably the most famous playboy of his time. The crazy part is that he wasn’t born into some enormous fortune. He simply had an almost supernatural ability to move through the world. Paris, Rome, New York, Monte Carlo. He became friends with everyone from politicians and royalty to actors, racing drivers and some of the wealthiest people alive. He married five times, including Doris Duke and Barbara Hutton, two women whose fortunes were almost incomprehensible at the time. His divorces alone made him a very wealthy man. Yet people who knew him rarely seemed to talk about the money first. They talked about his charm. That’s what fascinates me about Rubirosa. By most accounts, he had this ability to make whoever he was speaking to feel like the most important person in the room. Men wanted him around. Women adored him. He dressed beautifully, spoke several languages, played polo seriously and raced cars at a level where it wasn’t just some rich guy’s hobby. And somehow none of it seemed forced. There was also plenty about him that was messy, reckless and far from admirable. The mythology has probably swallowed some of the real man at this point. But even after stripping away the exaggerations, his life is ridiculous. He eventually died exactly the way you would expect someone like Rubirosa to die. In Paris, in 1965, after a night celebrating a polo victory, he crashed his Ferrari 250 GT into a tree. He was 56. No Instagram. No personal brand. No carefully constructed image of an interesting life. He just lived one. Porfirio Rubirosa. What a character. #PorfirioRubirosa #Rubirosa #DominicanRepublic #Dominicano #RepublicaDominicana
