@hiphopofthe90s: Lil’ Troy made one of Houston’s biggest rap anthems without rapping a single verse on it 👀🔥 “Wanna Be a Baller” carries his name, but Big T sings the hook while Yungstar, F Pat, Lil’ Will and H.A.W.K. take the verses. Several of those artists were part of the S.U.C. and the wider Houston scene around DJ Screw. The production has another story behind it. Its signature synth progression reworks the chords from Prince’s “Little Red Corvette.” Lil’ Troy later said Prince heard what they had done, liked it and approved the use. That mattered because Prince was famously selective about who could use his music. The song became one of the few Houston rap records of its era to reach a national audience. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 and helped Lil’ Troy’s debut album reach the Top 25 of the Billboard 200. Did you know about the Prince connection? 🤔⁉️ #rap #hiphop #rapmusic #hiphopmusic
