I was there in early 2000s. Went as a company trip, stayed at a place near the wall. Everyday we have to pass by the flight of steps as it was the only way the bus could pass thru. At night the lights on the steps would light up. We were looking out of the window when my colleague pointed out to me and said “Hey i dont remember them putting statues of the soldiers there on the steps.” When I looked indeed there was a soldier in the middle of the longg flight of vertical stairs. So we looked at each other and within that split second, the “statue” disappeared. We were very sure we saw a soldier statue standing there and we just looked at each other and just kept our mouth shut.

In ancient times, the Great Wall was a war defense and observation tool. Ancient soldiers would patrol on the Great Wall. They would walk around and patrol all night. Once they found the enemy‘s situation, they would burn wolf dung and raise wolf smoke to warn the army to enter the combat state. Listening to that footsteps is very similar to the slow footsteps of ancient soldiers on night patrols.
