Back in 1952, a high school counselor looked at nineteen-year-old Judith Love Cohen and told her that nice girls go to finishing school. In those days, women were expected to learn etiquette, pour tea, and find a good husband. Engineering was strictly considered a man's job. But Judith did not care about expectations. She enrolled in engineering school instead, changing the course of space history forever. When Judith walked into her classrooms at Brooklyn College, she routinely found herself as the only woman in the room. Whenever she raised her hand to answer a difficult question, the boys in the class would laugh at her. Judith did not shrink away or stay quiet. Instead, she simply raised her hand higher. She eventually transferred to the University of Southern California, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Out of 800 graduates in her class, only eight were women. At that time, female engineers made up a mere 0.05% of the entire profession. Her brilliant mind caught the attention of TRW, a major aerospace contractor for NASA. Judith was assigned to a high-stakes project: building the Abort-Guidance System for the Apollo Lunar Module. This was the emergency backup computer designed for the absolute worst-case scenario. It was the "if everything goes wrong" system. Judith knew the immense weight of her responsibility. As she later explained, the system absolutely had to work perfectly, because if astronauts ever needed to turn it on, they were already in a life-or-death situation. By August 1969, Judith was nine months pregnant with her fourth child and still working full-time. Her colleagues urged her to go home, rest, and prepare for the birth, but she refused. The critical equations for the system were not finished yet. One morning, her contractions actually started. Instead of panicking, Judith grabbed giant stacks of computer printouts covered in trajectories, complex calculations, and circuitry diagrams, and she went to the office anyway. When the contractions grew too intense to ignore, she finally agreed to go to the hospital. However, she packed up her work and brought the printouts right into the delivery room with her. Nurses walked into the room and were stunned to find her scribbling math calculations on her paperwork between painful contractions. When a nurse told her that she was in labor, Judith famously shot back that she was in math. Right there in the hospital bed, something clicked. She spotted the final flaw in the backup guidance system and solved the problem completely. Shortly after fixing the math, she gave birth to her baby boy, Thomas Jacob Black. The world would later grow up to know that exact baby boy as the famous Hollywood actor and musician, Jack Black. The very next day, Judith called her boss from her hospital bed. She calmly told him that she had successfully fixed the guidance problem, and then casually added that the baby had arrived too. Months later, in April 1970, disaster struck the Apollo 13 mission. An oxygen tank exploded two hundred thousand miles away from Earth. The main navigation system failed completely, leaving three astronauts trapped in deep space with a rapidly diminishing margin for survival. The crew crowded into the lunar module and flipped on Judith's backup system. The Abort-Guidance System worked perfectly, calculating the critical engine burns required to steer the damaged spacecraft safely back home. Astronaut Jim Lovell later admitted that without that specific system, they never would have made it back alive. Judith spent the rest of her life creating engineering systems for satellites and the Hubble Space Telescope, while also writing books to encourage young girls to enter STEM fields. She proved that women belong in the labs, the boardrooms, and the history books. So the next time someone tells a girl to stay in her lane or stick to traditional roles, remind them of Judith Love Cohen.

#Aristino #Tiepnoihuyenthoai #HoptaccungAristino #Fallwinter2026 #5663ldc
