💻 YOUR CAR HAS COMPUTERS… BUT DOES IT GET SLOWER WHEN IT SITS? Someone asked me a question recently that I honestly thought was pretty damn interesting: “Are the computers in a car like the computer sitting on your desk at home?” Think about it. You buy a newer car with 10,000 miles on it. It’s loaded with computers, sensors, cameras, infotainment, driver-assistance technology, control modules… basically, there’s a LOT of technology packed into that vehicle. So if the car barely gets driven, does all that technology eventually have the same problem as an old computer? Does it start getting slow? Does it take longer to boot? Does sitting around actually hurt it? Here’s where it gets interesting. Not exactly. A car’s computers aren’t operating like your home PC that gets slower because you’ve filled the hard drive with files and installed 47 programs you don’t need. Modern vehicles can have dozens — and in some architectures, more than 100 — electronic control units communicating with each other. Those computers control everything from the engine and transmission to safety systems, infotainment and other vehicle functions. And here’s the part people might not expect: A low-mileage car that sits a lot isn’t automatically a better car. The computers themselves don’t necessarily become “slow” just because the car isn’t being driven. But the vehicle around those computers still ages. Batteries can discharge. Brakes can develop rust. Seals can dry out. And modern vehicles can have electrical systems that continue drawing power even while the car is parked. So if I’m looking at a 2023 with 15,000 miles versus a 2023 with 45,000 miles, I’m not automatically saying the 15,000-mile car is better. I want to know how those miles — and that time — were spent. Was it maintained? Was it sitting outside? Was the battery repeatedly going dead? Was it driven regularly? Was it properly serviced? That’s where mileage becomes just one piece of the story. And honestly, this is why I love talking about cars. There are so many things people assume about a vehicle that aren’t necessarily true. So I’m throwing this one out to everybody: Would you rather buy a newer car with extremely low miles that sat a lot, or the same car with considerably more miles that was driven and maintained regularly? And if you’re a technician, engineer, dealership person or someone who really understands automotive electronics… I want your take on the computer side of this. Am I looking at this the right way? Let’s hear it. #Automotive #Cars #CarBuying #CarDealership #AutoIndustry
