never heard it called shake and freeze. It's always been hitstop. And camera shake isn't always included.

The hit also needs to look like a hit. I remember playing an old game. maybe Gothic one, where it looked like you're trying to massage the enemy with your weapon, and the impact animation on the enemy couldn't save it from looking wonky

Lean back on impact. The hop back doesn't add the weight to the motion and I get anxious the next hit will miss even though it doesn't work that way.

If you’re interested inaling a game that has solid fundamental gameplay I would -urge- you not to use knock back in that way, it makes the action ‘bouncy’ and loose. Instead learn from classic action games like beat em ups and fighting games and use hitstun instead.
