@moreperfectunion: Refrigerators in over 300 supermarkets across France got hacked to heat up to over 120F — begging the question of why are refrigerators connected to the internet?
My dad went refrigerator shopping without me and the salesman convinced him to buy a smart fridge. The touchpad glitched out in 3 days so I turned it off. Fridge cooling stopped working a year later. We called to get it fixed 3 times. All 3 times they said they can't fix it without replacing the door with the touchpad. All 3 times (after a 2 week wait) they say they can't replace the door bc the company no longer make those doors. After 2 MONTHS, it was our neighbor, who's a retired refrigerator maintenance guy & hasn't fixed a single fridge in a decade, that finally fixed that damned fridge. I HATE smart appliances

Guys I used to work at a grocery warehouse. They connected them to the internet to make it easier to monitor the temperature and also do stock control.

So what you’re saying is that the implementation of smart devices over the past 10 or so years was a campaign to gather and sell our data and further take advantage of consumers. Awesome.

For people who don’t understand, if equipment, valves, chillers, etc are not connected to a network, they cannot be easily monitored. Meaning, something could break and no one would know in time before the produce was spoiled. This is common for refineries, buildings, factories, and things small as freezers and refrigerators.

Idk, maybe it's just me but it seems like it would have been cheaper to pay a few humans maybe €60,000/year to monitor the systems instead of putting them on the internet and end up losing millions of euros and possibly your business if it catches on fire. But hey, that's just my math.

Now imagine all the “smart” TVs people have in their houses that no longer receive security patches and connect to the internet

the only things that will connect to the internet in my home will be my phone, TV, and computer(including gaming consoles) anything else is a liability or to big of a headache

My family was very offline, we had internet but in the countryside it wasn’t very good, YouTube was probably the most data-intensive drain on our connection. One day the XBox 360 said that it needed an update to continue, we had no online games everything on the machine came installed or on the disc. It was probably only connected because it demanded it. We started the update, it took hours to download and run, we eventually learned that the update had removed the ability to receive future updates, but after it had basically delested the entire system. The machine had been remotely bricked, the company explained the whole thing said it was their fault and refused to fix or replace anything. That’s for an optional entertainment device. Some people have their hearing aids connected to the internet because they require a subscription. Companies can just decide to turn your devices off and charge you to keep using them. It’s insanely risky

I’m worried. My fridge has been hooked to the internet for over 15 years. It’s a a smart fridge that has many apps like music, news, recipes, photos, etc. was looking to upgrade but will not get a new one. I loved my fridge but exposing this vulnerability is changing my mind
