@nodakgirl72: #creatorsearchinsights There was a time when I could barely read certain posts without getting upset. Especially posts about estrangement. I would immediately think, “You have no idea. You have no idea what we’ve been through.” Sometimes I scrolled past. Sometimes I carried that anger long after I put my phone down. What I didn’t understand then was how much pain those words were touching inside me. One of the biggest changes in my healing came when I started asking: “What about this is triggering me?” “What does it remind me of?” “Is something harmful happening now, or does this feel familiar because of what happened before?” I didn’t always know the answer. But those questions helped me begin to separate what was happening in the present from what I was still carrying from the past. That didn’t mean every uncomfortable situation was good for me. It didn’t mean I needed to tolerate mistreatment or force myself to keep reading when I felt overwhelmed. Sometimes I needed distance. Sometimes I needed a boundary. But when I felt ready, becoming curious about my reactions helped me understand myself. I started looking through a healthy and unhealthy lens. What was unhealthy about what happened to me? What had I learned from it? Which of those patterns was I still carrying into my own reactions and relationships? I began recognizing unhealthy patterns in others—and within myself. That was difficult to face, but it gave me something I could work on. It also changed how I understood a safe space. To me, a safe space means we can talk about what happened, what it did to us, and how we are finding our way forward. We can have boundaries. We can disagree. We can ask for respectful treatment. And we can leave room for stories that are different from our own. My healing led me toward faith. Someone else may be healing from harm done in the name of religion. Both experiences deserve to be heard. Sharing my faith does not mean someone else has to believe, and sharing religious trauma does not make someone’s pain an attack on my story. There is a difference between sharing what helped us and insisting that everyone else needs it. There is also a difference between expressing hurt and insulting someone whose experience is different. I want healing spaces where neither person has to disappear. Understanding my triggers became an important part of my healing. I stopped seeing every strong reaction as proof that someone else needed to change and began asking what that reaction could help me understand about myself. We each move at our own pace. Some days, stepping away is what we need. Other days, we have room to look a little deeper. We can support both—and share what helped us move forward without demanding that everyone take the same path. 🤍
