I get a lot of young journalists reaching out to me on LinkedIn and such asking about how I got into journalism and ended up as editor in chief of a paper in nyc. As with most things, it’s been a combination of very hard work as well as luck, and I’m so grateful that I get to do the work I love every day. I’ve always been most drawn to accountability stories and investigations. Leading a newsroom, I get to help passionate reporters carve out their own beats, and also have the time to work on my own investigations as well (I have so many FOIL requests alone that will remain pending for months, so not being on multiple daily deadlines for the first time in my career is amazing!) My biggest advice for people looking to break into journalism: - Get clips: intern, freelance, get experience however you can! - Read read read. News, books, novels, anything that keeps your writing brain working. - Network! The journalism world is surprisingly small, and journalists are generally cool people imo. If you see someone doing work you admire, reach out — they’ll probably be happy to talk. - Local news does it best: Basically my mantra. Local news is THE BEST place to start out if you ask me. If you want to really get to know a community and really make a difference, smaller newsrooms are great places to get the exposure and close mentorship you need to grow and establish your voice. - Know that journalism is changing: Like I said, luck is a large factor in the industry. Newsrooms and their resources are shrinking, and in many cases, so is the number of available staff writer positions. Getting creative about getting your work out there and taking the rejections as they come is so important. - Know that the money is… usually not great. Seriously, if you’re looking for a shiny, high-paying gig, look elsewhere. The rewards of a career in journalism typically don’t manifest in your checking account. (Obviously, you can make a living as a journalist! But especially early in your career, money can be tight).
