Hold Your Fire - Maritime Ballad · Pirate Sea Song A rousing 18th-century-style pirate sea song based on a real encounter between the English East Indiaman "Ockham" and an Angrian squadron off Dabul on the Malabar Coast in 1732. Five grabs and three gallivats attacked the "Ockham", firing ten nine-pounder guns into her stern while Captain Jobson's ship answered with only two stern-chasers. With the rigging being badly damaged, Jobson deliberately reduced his return fire to make the pirates believe that his ammunition was nearly exhausted, luring them within a cable's length before suddenly ordering the "Ockham" to tack into their formation and unleash round shot, grape, and small-arms fire. The song uses a solo-versus-choir call-and-response structure, with the soloist narrating the action and the crew answering with increasingly forceful chants. Its distinctive musical feature is a shifting rhythmic language: narrative verses move between iambic, trochaic, and flexible accentual patterns, while the chorus locks into a driving, repetitive sailor's pulse. Short, fragmented commands in the battle break create a sudden rhythmic acceleration at the moment of the tack. Raw male vocals, hand percussion, wooden knocks, stomps, fiddle, sparse concertina, and low drone create the atmosphere of sailors telling/singing the story together in a ship's mess. The final bridge and outro briefly slow the rhythm to deliver the outcome: the "Ockham" survives, one Angrian grab is badly damaged, and the remaining attackers withdraw. #LetThemCome #PirateSeaSong #SeaShanty #Historical #MaritimeBallad @zayartsstudio
