Maybe one of the most special things about Downtown Cairo is that you don’t have to look for its history in books. You can find it in a building, a street, an old shop… or in the hands of a craftsman still practicing a craft he learned from his father and grandfather. On Art Street, we met Mohamed Ibrahim, who is keeping the craft of kilim and rug weaving alive, using sheep and camel wool and a traditional loom to create each piece by hand. It’s a craft that takes time. But perhaps what takes even more time is keeping it alive. That’s why Mohamed chose to teach it to children in schools and institutions, making sure that what was passed down to him from one generation can continue to the next. Downtown Cairo isn’t just a place that preserves Cairo’s memory… It is a living memory.
