@nytimes: Artificial intelligence has gone from struggling with basic arithmetic to helping solve some of mathematics’ most famous open problems — and the field is reckoning with what that means. Steven Strogatz, a professor of mathematics at Cornell University, joined Rachel Abrams (@rachelabramsnyt) on “The Daily” to describe the excitement and grief of watching A.I. take on work that gives people a sense of purpose. #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Math #Cornell

Paradoxically, AI is forcing us to rethink what it means to be human, and what really matters. Unfortunately, "Knowing stuff, and doing things" has too often become humanity's way to value the worth of an individual. We studied for it. We worked for it. It gave us a false sense of meaning. Now that a computer can do it (or at least trick us into thinking it can) better than we do, there are many people who look at themselves in the mirror and ask "now what?" and "what value do I bring to society?". Someone once said if AI answers all the easy questions, we will be left with only the hard ones. I couldn't agree more.

in chess the best chess player is a computer and its been that way for a long time. People still learn chess and enjoy it and watch people compete. I think life will just be like chess but with other domains.

He’s crying as he’s saying life is beautiful because it’s short and I just find that odd because it’s like it’s a new revelation for him. Haven’t we all been thinking about that since like age 9?

The Bible has stood the test of time - still supremely relevant in the age of ai. Man can’t find ultimate meaning and peace apart from God.

I majored in philosophy in college, and I was always told I should have done STEM. Now STEM is being threatened by Ai. It reminds me of a question that I heard in my undergrad- how do you live a meaningful life in an infinite and unforgiving universe?

The neurosis of that student. He can create beautiful things and feel fulfillment from it but capitalism made him belive that his profession would be the only valuable thing about him.

It’s so true…doesn’t matter how smart AI seems to be…it doesn’t live or enjoy life and it sure doesn’t understand or feel joy and excitement from lived experiences. That’s ours.
