I feel it’s like someone asking you to switch seats on an airplane. Is it nice to say yes? Of course. Is it mandatory no? Is it ok to say no? Absolutely.

Crazy Hats & Stories :
If you steal/snipe it from a kid then yta but if you catch it fairly then you shouldn't be expected to give it up. That idea is just more of the parental entitlement thats everywhere these days. The world does not owe your kid something just because they are a kid. Would it be a nice thing to do? Yes, same as if you gave it away to anyone else but it doesn't make you a bad person for not doing it.

I'd add that the contextual features of the catch itself matter. If you reach right in front of someone else's glove or jockey them out of the way, especially a kid, that's not a fair catch. Civility in the process itself should be a feature. But I'm also not a big sports guy because I think the fans are often excessively competitive and tribalistic, and that makes a culture I don't find palatable. So, my bias might be coloring things and I don't think I should really have a stake in the matter as someone outside the community.

If you and a kid both go for a ball, give it to the kid. If you catch one yourself, it’s yours. And adults who catch it may be in turn giving it to a child in their life anyway.

I feel this way about cross country races when a runner goes down...... don't guilt other runners to stop and assist, they are racing. They are not there as medical professionals.

I love how you are either a hero or villain in this scenario, nothing in-between.

I might give it to my kid, but I definitely won’t be giving it to your kid.

I’d play the long game. It comes with just a bit more risk. Give the ball to the kid. Be perceived as the hero, generous & kind. Ball club picks up on the viral moment as it’s sure to be. Ball club awards giving fan with a signed jersey or ball, team pic or tickets. local fan gets 15 minutes of fame instead of notoriety. Child gets ball. Club gets promoted. Fan gets much more. Win for all involved!

it's the entitlement of everyone else thinking that that guy has to give it to a little kid when he caught it and not the little kid. the kid is literally like 3 years old
