At age 13, Tokunbo Akintola, son of Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Premier of Western Nigeria, became the first African student admitted to Eton College, one of Britain’s most prestigious educational institutions. His mother traveled from home to assist with his uniform and to ensure his smooth transition into the school environment. . Having previously attended a preparatory school in Berkshire since 1961, where he was known as “Toks,” he approached his new chapter with anticipation. Although initially unfamiliar with the traditional uniform, he adapted promptly. . During an interview at the London residence of Western Nigeria’s Agent-General, where he was staying, Tokunbo expressed enthusiasm for English studies, cricket, and athletics, confidently noting his speed on the track. However, he admitted in the British public school tradition of fairness that mathematics was his weakest subject, adding, “I won’t be too happy to meet the maths master.” .
