@pmkamlapersadbissessar: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar: MY GOVERNMENT PROPOSES TWO CONSTITUTIONALLY GUARANTEED SENATE SEATS FOR TOBAGO Since Independence, Tobago has enjoyed constitutional protection guaranteeing it at least two elected seats in the House of Representatives. That protection recognises Tobago’s unique place within our Republic and ensures that its people are represented in the elected House of Representatives. Yet our constitutional arrangements remain significantly imbalanced. While Tobago is guaranteed representation in the House of Representatives, the Constitution provides no corresponding guarantee of representation for Tobago in the Senate. Today, I am pleased to announce that my Government proposes to introduce legislation to amend the Constitution to guarantee Tobago two seats in the Senate, in addition to its two seats in the House of Representatives. I am advancing this proposal as part of my Government’s unwavering commitment to recognising Tobago as an equal partner in our Republic. This represents a meaningful step towards greater empowerment for Tobago, ahead of wider discussions on autonomy. Under my proposed constitutional amendment, two of the nine Senate seats currently filled by the President, acting in her discretion, would be reserved for Tobagonians. This means that, alongside Tobago’s two elected Members of Parliament in the House of Representatives, Tobago would have two constitutionally guaranteed voices in the Senate. My Government’s proposed measure will strengthen Tobago’s voice in our national democracy and give meaningful expression to the words of our National Anthem: “Side by side we stand, Islands of the blue Caribbean Sea.” 🇹🇹 #Tobago #senate #partner
