Sausalito used to be a cool little town full of artists, musicians and other creatives. It had character and characters. The houseboats were colorful and funky, many made with salvaged wood. Then the rich people came, bought out the waterfront, replaced the artsy houseboats with mega mansion floating homes in neutral colors and kicked out the anchor outs. Most of the creatives left or died off. Now the floating homes sell in the millions. Sausalito is more like Newport than Sausalito. It has become ultra gentrified.

Boat hulls do need to be scraped and patched and repainted regularly. There’s also the issue of human sewage going into the bay.

There should be an alternative. I don’t agree with people living on the boats to avoid any fees. They should be participating in supporting a clean and healthy bay. But there are many who need to be on the water, there should be safe and affordable ways.
