@ladyhunter1718: When I could finally find the right words, I thought people would understand what I had experienced. Yet I’ve learned that some people will never understand what they haven’t experienced. Domestic violence isn’t always something you can see. Sometimes it’s the constant criticism, the manipulation, the intimidation, or the way someone slowly makes you question your own reality. After you finally leave, the effects don’t magically disappear. Sometimes leaving is only the beginning of an entirely different battle. I’ve experienced firsthand what it’s like to have my voice taken away, my character questioned, and my experiences dismissed by people who never bothered to ask what actually happened. I know what it’s like to live in a community where you constantly feel the need to defend yourself. I speak because I remember what it felt like when I didn’t have a voice.
