@user5156903971931: Artificial intelligence is growing. Cloud computing is expanding. And companies are building data centers to meet the demand for computing power. But these facilities need something that cannot be stored in the cloud: Electricity. Lots of it. So, here's the question we should all be asking: When a large data center comes to a community, who pays for the infrastructure it needs—and who benefits from the investment? A data center is more than a building full of computers. It is a major electricity customer. The servers process information, support cloud services and run artificial intelligence applications. Cooling equipment, power systems and other building infrastructure require electricity too. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's (IEA) October outlook forecasts that electricity demand will continue growing, with commercial-sector demand—including data centers—projected to rise by 2.8% in 2027. Manufacturing is also contributing to the increase. More demand means the electricity system must be prepared to serve it. That can require additional generation, transmission lines, substations and other infrastructure. The key question is not just how much electricity a data center needs, it's how that demand will be met—and who pays for the required upgrades. Research cited in a recent Reuters report found that some surveyed data centers could potentially reduce their peak electricity consumption by 10% to 30%, depending on the facility and its capabilities. This is known as demand response: temporarily reducing or shifting electricity use when the grid is under pressure. The approach is still developing. Not every computing task can be shifted or interrupted easily, and the potential varies by facility. But greater flexibility could help limit peak demand and, in some circumstances, reduce the need for costly grid investments. The takeaway: Data centers don't have to be passive electricity consumers. How they operate can matter to the grid.
