@sanddollarshelling: This alphabet cone was HUGE. One of the biggest we've seen come off the beach in a long time. A little about this shell: the alphabet cone is native to Southwest Florida and gets its name from those orange-brown markings, which look like rows of tiny letters written around the shell. While it's alive, the animal inside lives buried in shallow sand and feeds on small marine worms using a tiny venom-tipped harpoon. That's why we always say: if it's occupied, admire it and put it back. Empty ones are the keepers. And the shelling right now? Amazing. The storm out in the Gulf, plus the king tides, churned up the bottom and pushed a fresh layer of shells onto our beaches. Days like this don't come around often, and this cone was the reward for braving a little wind. #ParadiseCoast #VisitFlorida #EveryTideTellsAStory #MarcoIslandFlorida #AlphabetCone #Shelling #FloridaShells
