Handouts almost always come with strings attached, and the terms can be a lot more than the money is worth. Besides, if they suddenly stop, you can be in a much worse position than if you left on your own terms.

While yes you have a point but you are ignoring that this changes the dynamic in the long run. He will always feel obligated to this friend. If their friendship doesn't work out and he's the one to end it, he will be the bad guy. If they fall out, said friend can use how they assisted against him as a jab. So let's not act like it's very black and white.
